Samoa Beach feels like the best kept secret close to Eureka and it’s just walking distance away from the Nordic Aquafarms site. It’s a long, spacious stretch of sand and dunes with unending ocean waves. If a nice walk, a lunch break, or a spot to catch the sunset is the order for the day, this is the destination. Low-key and picturesque. It’s easy to access, dog-friendly and family-friendly with plenty of space. Some advice from locals: parking on soft sand is not recommended; facilities are limited; and carry out what you brought in. Overall, it is a beautiful spot to get a salty air fix and we’re fortunate to be close by.
The defunct pulp mill makes for an industrial back drop, but it’s easy to imagine a different skyline for the future, isn’t it? Although the remnants of pulp and lumber mills still remain, Samoa has more to offer and a walk on the beach inspires contemplation of the possibilities.
A little Samoa Beach history: In 1917, the USS Milwaukee had been sent to rescue a beached Navy sub but became beached itself. Parts of it can still be seen at a low minus tide. Here’s a little more about that: https://www.northcoastjournal.com/humboldt/wreck-of-the-milwaukee/Content?oid=2166922
